Crushers Welcome Back Noseworthy

New Glasgow- The Pictou County Weeks Crushers will have a familiar face in the line up this Thursday when they host the Summerside Western Capitals at the JBM.

Tyler Noseworthy, who was a 16yr old rookie when the Crushers won the Fred Page Cup in 2008 has returned to Pictou County in search of another championship. Noseworthy left the Chrushers last season at Christmas and finished the year with the Victoraville Tigres of the QMJHL. He returned to the Tigres this season but ultimately decided that a return to the Crushers was in his best interest.

"Obviously having a player like Tyler back in our line up is going to have some impact" said Crushers Assistant coach Chad McDavid. "He's a year older and has year of Major Junior Hockey under his belt now,  we're looking forward to seeing him in the line up."

The puck drops at 7:30pm Thursday night. The Crushers then head out on the road for a pair of games at the MJAHL showcase in Summerside, PE.  Saturday night at 8:00pm, the Crushers square off with the Woodstock Slammers and then Sunday at 4:00pm the Crushers face the Summerside Western Capitals. (Please note, even though the game is being played in Summerside, the Crushers are listed as the home side for their game against the Caps.)

 

 

Crushers deal for Morin.

New Glasgow -  The Pictou County Weeks Crushers made another roster move over the weekend, aquiring the rights to Dartmouth, NS native Christian Morin from the Dieppe Commandos. In exchange, Dieppe receives from Pictou County a conditional 3rd round pick in 2011.

Morin currently plays with the Val -d'Or Foreurs of the QMJHL. In 102 career games, Morin has 9G and 12A for 21pts.

Crushers still searching for a full 60 minute effort.

Woodstock - Six games into the regular season and the Crushers coaching staff is still waiting for a complete 60 minute effort from their hockey club.The Woodstock Slammers used 3 unanswered 3rd period goals to defeat the visiting Weeks Crushers 7-4 Friday night.

The Crushers opened the scoring in the 1st period with a Dan Joyce goal at 4:50. The Slammers responded with goals from Lucas McKinley, Chad Young and Matt Tomah before Geoff Hum brought the Crushers back with a power play score as the period was ending. 

 Joyce tied the game for Weeks with a power play goal at 2:25 of the second. They teams then traded goals - John Williamson for the Slammers and Michael Hynes, unassisted, for the Crushers leaving the teams tied at 4 at the end of the period.

The third was all Woodstock with goals from Nick Huard (the game winner on the power play), Sean Stagles and Williamson.

The Crushers were 2 of 7 on the power play and Woodstock was 1 of 8 with the extra man.

Andre Guay got the win for the Slammers stopping 27 of 31. Randy Chisholm faced 55 shots, stopping 48 as he took the loss for Weeks.


 

CRUSHERS WIN IN OT
New Glasgow - It took a full 60 minutes but The Pictou County Weeks Crushers downed the Bridgewater Nauss TIM-BR Mart Lumberjacks 3-2 in overtime Thursday night in New Glasgow.

Cody Roland led the Crushers with 1 goal and 1 assist.

After a scoreless first period, Jeremy Sheppard (powerplay) opened the scoring at 10:01 to give the Crushers a 1-0 lead. Jacob Conrad scored at 13:36 to tie the game at 1-1 after the second period. Jake Lewis scored 55 seconds into the third period to give the Lumberjacks a 2-1 lead. Mitchell Maynard scored at 16:25 to knot the score at 2-2 and force extra time. In overtime, Roland (game winner) scored at 1:37 for the win.

Pictou County went 1 for 3 on the powerplay while Bridgewater went 0 for 6.

Alex Newman stopped 33 of 35 shots for the win while Philip Wright stopped 39 of 42 shots in the loss.
RAMBLERS EDGE CRUSHERS

Amherst - For 30 minutes, the Pictou County Weeks Crushers played a perfect road game. But once again, a slow start ended up costing them the two points.

The Crushers travelled to the always entertaining Amherst Stadium Saturday night and spotted the hometown Ramblers an early 2-0 lead before eventually dropping a 4-3 decision.

Drew McLaughlin led the Ramblers with 1 goal and 2 assists while Justin Matthews and Zach Carson added 1 goal and 1 assist each.

Scott Bragg opened the scoring at 7:00 to give the Ramblers a 1-0 lead after the first period. McLaughlin scored at 3:55 to extend the lead to 2-0. Ryan Niederkorn scored at 5:27 to get the Crushers on the scoreboard at 2-1. Matthews scored at 8:09 to reclaim a 2 goal lead for Amherst at 3-1 after the second period. Michael Hynes (powerplay) scored at 2:13 to get Pictou County to within a goal at 3-2 until Jeremy Sheppard scored 57 seconds later at 3:10 to tie the game at 3-3. Zach Carson (game winner) scored at 8:04 for the win.

Amherst went 0 for 2 on the powerplay while Pictou County went 1 for 4.

Jonathan Waye stopped 33 of 36 shots for the win while Alex Drake stopped 23 of 27 shots in the loss.

CRUSHERS WIN BIG

New Glasgow -The Pictou County Weeks Crushers scored early and often Thursday night at the John Brother MacDonald Stadium. In the end, the Crushers defeated the Miramichi Timberwolves 7-1.

6 different players led the Crushers with 1 goal and 1 assist each.

Sean Hoyt opened the scoring at 2:19 with a unassisted shorthanded goal to give the Crushers a 1-0 lead. Aaron Maas scored his first MJAHL goal at 7:37 to extend the lead to 2-0. Mathieu Boudreau on the powerplay scored at 14:42 to increase the lead to 3-0. Nick Croft scored at 17:21 to get the Timberwolves on the scoreboard at 3-1 after the first period.

Dan Joyce (powerplay) scored at 11:05 to widen the lead to 4-1. Ryan Fortune scored at 16:36 to make the score 5-1 after the second period. Crushers captain Geoff Hum scored the Crushers second shorthanded goal of the game at 4:05 to run the score to 6-1. Chris Dart rounded out the scoring at 19:44.

Pictou County went 2 for 9 on the powerplay while Miramichi went 0 for 9.

Alex Drake stopped 33 of 34 shots for the win while Jonathan MacKinnon (40:00 - first and third period) stopped 20 of 25 shots in the loss. Luke Gallant (20:00 - second period) stopped 8 of 10 shots.

The Crushers next see action on Saturday night, when they travel to the hostile grounds of Amherst Stadium to take on the Ramblers.

CRUSHERS ADD DEPTH IN ROLAND

New Glasgow -The Weeks Crushers added depth to their alrady potent offense on Tuesday when they acquired 20 year-old left winger Cody Roland from the Truro Bearcats. Rolans, a native of Sydney, earned 44 points over two seasons in Truro. 

We are pretty excited to get him", said Crushers Head Coach and GM Troy Dumville. "Anytime you can add a guy with his kind of experience, you have to take advantage of it.  Roland is a competitor who scored 13 goals as a rookie in this league.  We feel he can contribute both on the ice and in our dressing room."

In return for Roland, the Bearcats received a 9th round pick in the 2010 draft and a 4th round pick in 2011.

CRUSHERS FALL TO RIVAL BEARCATS
The Truro Bearcats (1-0-0-0) blanked the Pictou County Weeks Crushers (1-1-0-0) 4-0 Saturday night in Truro.

Eric Louis-Seize led the Bearcats with 2 assists.

Truro - After a scoreless first period, Jordan Mock (unassisted powerplay, game winner) opened the scoring at 3:06 to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead. Travis Moore scored at 16:19 to extend the lead to 2-0 after the second period. Dana Fraser (powerplay) scored at 10:15 to increase the lead to 3-0. Stephen Walker rounded out the scoring at 19:19.

Truro went 2 for 6 on the powerplay while Pictou County went 0 for 9.

Kirk Rafuse stopped all 23 shots he faced for the shutout victory while Alex Newman stopped 35 of 39 shots in the loss.
CRUSHERS DOWN TIGERS IN SEASON OPENER
New Glasgow - The Pictou County Weeks Crushers (1-0-0-0) downed the Campbellton Tigers (0-1-0-0) 4-1 Thursday night in New Glasgow in the opening night of action to start the 2009-2010 season.

Geoff Hum and Mitchell Maynard led the Crushers with 1 goal and 1 assist each.

Dan Joyce opened the scoring at 3:36 to give the Crushers a 1-0 lead. Maynard (game winner) scored at 7:39 to extend the lead to 2-0 after the first period. Nicholas Cyr scored at 5:55 to cut the lead in half at 2-1 after the second period. Sean Hoyt scored at 1:32 to regain the Crushers 2 goal lead at 3-1. Hum rounded out the scoring at 15:19 to secure the win.

Pictou County went 0 for 2 on the powerplay while Campbellton went 0 for 4.

Randy Chisholm stopped 28 of 29 shots for the win while John Hillier stopped 30 of 34 shots in the loss.
AMHERST HOCKEY PLAYER HEADED TO NCAA


AMHERST, NS, September 9, 2009 - Amherst native Scott McManaman has accepted a scholorship to attend the University of New England in Bidderford, Maine and play hockey for the Nor Easters in the the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Men’s Ice Hockey League regarded as one the premier NCAA Division III ice hockey leagues in the United States. 

The University New England is an independent, coeducational university with two distinctive campuses in two Maine coastal cities. The University Campus is located on a beautiful site in Biddeford, Maine, where the Saco River flows into the Atlantic Ocean.

From its College of Osteopathic Medicine and College of Health Professions to its newly established College of Pharmacy, UNE is recognized as a leading educator of healthcare professionals. In addition, UNE offers a comprehensive liberal arts education, with more than 30 undergraduate majors in its College of Arts & Sciences,.

MCManaman played provincial hockey in Cumberland County and he originaly was drafted by the Truro Bearcats, and played Major Midget AAA with the Pictou Weeks Construction squad. The Bearcats traded his rights to his hometown Amherst Junior A Ramblers who later traded his rights to the Pictou County Weeks Crushers. 

During his season with the Crushers he helped the team capture the Fred Page Cup Eastern Canadian Junior Championship. The team then made it to semifinals at the Royal Bank Cup National Championship in Cornwall Ontario

He played  three seasons in the Maritime Junior A Hockey League playing 158 games during which he scored 65 goals and contributed 74 assists for 139 points 

He was also a member of the Atlantic Canadians team that  team that participated in the 2006 Chowder Cup in the Boston area 

This will be the first yeat the Nor'easters will play in the ECAC. The head coach of the UNE hockey program is Brad Holt 

University officials hope Holt will help UNE bring back an ice hockey program that enjoyed a great deal of success in the late 1970’s, winning three consecutive NAIA District 5 championships when the University was known as St. Francis College. 

The Nor’easters will play and practice at Biddeford Ice Arena. 

The Nor’easters will join Babson College, Castleton State College, University of Massachusetts Boston, New England College, Norwich University, Saint Anselm College, Saint Michael’s College, Skidmore College and the University of Southern Maine in ECAC East

The Weeks Crushers announced their captains for the 2009-10 season.  Geoff Hum will wear the 'C' this season while newcomer Dan Joyce and returnees Trent MacDonald and Ryan Fortune will be alternate captains.  "We are very fortunate to have a lot of leadership in the dressing room this season" said Head Coach Troy Dumville.  " We have a lot of former midget and junior captains on our squad and there were a lot of good choices to wear letters this season."

The Crushers also welcomed former Halifax Moosehead Scott McDonald into camp yesterday.  " He is going to make an impact with our team this season" confirmed Dumville.  " He is a strong two way defenceman who can lead our powerplay and play lots of key minutes for us"

The Crushers kick open their season at home on Thursday night against the much improved Campbellton Tigers.  Game time is 730pm at John Brother MacDonald Stadium.

New Glasgow - The Pictou County Weeks Crushers (2-0-0-0) edged the Truro Bearcats (0-1-0-0) 6-4 Wednesday night in New Glasgow in exhibition play.

Danny Robichaud, Corey Bennett and Mathieu Boudreau led the Crushers with 1 goal and 1 assist each. Chris Ivanko led the Bearcats with 1 goal and 2 assists.

Andrew Harmes (powerplay) opened the scoring at 12:12 to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead. Bennett (unassisted) scored at 18:56 to tie the game at 1-1 after the first period. Evan Brannon (powerplay) scored at 4:39 to give the Crushers a 2-1 lead. Jeremy Sheppard scored at 10:48 to extend the lead to 3-1. Boudreau (unassisted shorthanded) scored at 14:38 to increase the lead to 4-1. Josh Desmond (game winner) scored 54 seconds later at 15:32 to widen the lead to 5-1 after the second period. Jamie MacIntyre (unassisted) scored at 3:17 to cut the lead to 5-2. Robichaud scored 39 seconds later to regain the Crushers 4 goal lead at 6-2. Harmes (powerplay, second goal of game) scored at 6:32 to cut the lead in half at 6-3. Ivanko rounded out the scoring at 9:30.

Pictou County went 1 for 4 on the powerplay while Truro went 2 for 7.

The Pictou County Weeks Crushers (1-0-0-0) downed the Summerside Western Capitals (0-1-0-0) 5-2 Wednesday night in Summerside in exhibition play.

4 Players led the Crushers with 1 goal and 1 assist each.

Robbie Little (powerplay) opened the scoring at 3:50 to give the Crushers a 1-0 lead. Trent MacDonald (powerplay) scored at 8:33 to extend the lead to 2-0. Evan Brannon (game winner) scored 23 seconds later at 8:56 to increase the lead to 3-0. Neil Sherren scored at 18:14 to get the Western Capitals on the scoreboard at 3-1 after the first period. Matthew Shannon scored at 4:11 to cut the Pictou County lead to 3-2 after the second period. Danny Robichaud scored at 7:39 to make the score 4-2. Michael Hynes rounded out the scoring at 19:01.

Pictou County went 2 for 7 on the powerplay while Summerside went 0 for 7.

Eric Swanick (32:39) stopped 24 of 26 shots for the win before being replaced by Alex Drake. Drake (27:21) stopped all 11 shots he faced the rest of the way while Travis Wilkins (29:14) stopped 6 of 9 shots in the loss before being replaced by Logan Reid. Reid (30:46) stopped 8 of 10 shots the rest of the game.
Crushers Continue to Add

New Glasgow - The Pictou County Weeks Crushers continue dealing to firm up their 2009-2010 roster. The Crushers have acquired 6'2, 215lb defenceman Jeff MacRoberts from the Halifax Lions for the Crushers 5th rd pick in 2010 and future Considerations.

MacRoberts, who appeared in 30 games last season with the Summerside Western Capitals will be solid addition to the Crushers blueline this fall. MacRoberts orignally from NFLD is expected to arrive in New Glasgow early next week.

Crushers deal for Robichaud

New Glasgow - The Weeks Crushers have acquired  the rights to gritty forward Danny Robichaud from the Campbellton Tigers. In exchange, Pictou County sends an 8th round pick in the 2010 draft, a 5th round pick in the 2011 draft and future considerations to the Tigers. Robichaud, a native of Tracadie, New Brunswick, spent his first two seasons of MJAHL play in Campbellton where he notched up 16 points in 78 games. Last season, Robichaud tallied 186 penalty minutes.

Robichaud arrived to training camp late Monday and is expected to be in the line up when the Crushers travel to Summerside on Wednesday, September 2 for their first exhibition game of the pre season.
