Crushers city-bound for game with Wolverines

The News
NEW GLASGOW – In a dogfight with Amherst and Yarmouth for playoff positioning, the Pictou County Weeks Crushers can't overlook the MJAHL lightweights as the season winds down.
Winners of eight of their past 10, the Crushers travel to Halifax tonight to play the hapless Lions (6-34-5).
Pictou County has 52 points, one behind the Mariners and Ramblers, who are tied for second spot in the Maurice Bent division.
"It's no secret our best games aren't in Halifax. For whatever reason, we never have a great performance down there," assistant coach Chad McDavid said on Monday, prior to a team practice.
The Crushers got solid goaltending from Alexandre Quessy in their 2-1 win over the Truro Bearcats on Saturday; Quessy was selected the game's first star, stopped 28 shots and produced some outstanding stops in the late-going to hold off the Bearcats, who are in first with a six-point lead.
"He made some key saves when he needed to make them," McDavid said of the veteran puckstopper.
Pictou County's next next home game is Thursday against the Woodstock Slammers.
Crushers Edge Bearcats

Alexandre Quessy stopped 29 of 30 shots for the win while Richard Gagnon stopped 19 of 21 shots in the loss.

Crushers continue dealing, add Ford

ADAM RICHARDSON
The News

NEW GLASGOW – The Pictou County Weeks Crushers made yet another move yesterday, acquiring veteran defenceman Michael Ford from the Dieppe Commandos.
Ford is in his fourth year in the Maritime Junior A Hockey League, and is known as an offensive-type defenceman. He amassed 46 points in 52 games last year, but saw his production slump to just 13 points during this campaign.
The Crushers didn’t lose anything from their current roster to acquire Ford.?With the recent acquisitions of Taylor Epp and Joey Coffin over the weekend, along with Michael Hynes from the Miramichi Timberwolves in the Anthony Pisano deal, the team now carries 21 players, meaning they’ll likely use a healthy scratch for the remainder of the season. A maximum of 20 players can be dressed each game.
“We’re a more experienced team than we were this time last week, and we’ve added to our depth,” said Wade Taylor, Pictou County Weeks Crushers president. “We have a great amount of confidence in this team and our coaching staff going forward this season.”
The wacky week of moves was spurred by the departures of Stuart Lenehan and Tyler Noseworthy to Quebec Major Junior Hockey League clubs.
The team lost a skilled young forward and rugged power forward, but has since replaced the duo – and bruising rearguard Anthony Pisano – with offensive forward Hynes, imports Coffin and Epp, third-line hustler Ben Cameron from the Summerside Western Capitals and Ford, who could be a powerplay quarterback for the Crushers’ power play.
“We see (Ford) as a guy who will quarterback the power play, and bring his points up now that he’s joined our team,” Taylor said. “I also want to mention Hynes, who is really well-respected in this league for his playing and leadership abilities.”
All of the new Crushers should be in town by Thursday’s home game against the Miramichi Timberwolves, which will also mark the return of Pisano to John Brother MacDonald Stadium. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
Two forwards headed to Crushers

The News

NEW GLASGOW – The Pictou County Weeks Junior ‘A’ Crushers picked up two forwards over the weekend as the league’s trade deadline passed.

The first is Taylor Epp, a player from North Battleford, Sask.

Head coach Troy Ryan said Epp is an exceptional skater and a "good finisher" around the net. Epp, 18, was recommended to Ryan by a contact in the hockey world.

"It's worth giving a kid like that a shot," he said from Halifax.
"I've always been a big fan of (the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey league), and so that's one league I would take a gamble on."
The deal is not quite finalized, and is pending league approval.

The team also learned yesterday that they would receive Joey Coffin, a six-foot, 210 lb power-forward.

“He should be a physical presence for us,” said team president, Wade Taylor.
"We're bringing him in to hopefully be the quarterback on our powerplay," Ryan said.
The Crushers were pleased that they didn't have to give up any of their existing last-year players.

The Crushers are also close to finalizing a deal that would see them bring in a veteran MJAHL defenceman but couldn’t disclose details.
