Crushers surprise veteran Capitals
Crushers come a long way in one week
NEW GLASGOW ADAM RICHARDSON The News
After two losses in their first two games, and a veteran team coming to
town, the Pictou County Weeks Crushers could have easily thrown in the
towel before the puck was even dropped last night.
They didn't. Instead, the Crushers gutted out a 3-1 victory against the
Summerside Western Capitals last night at John Brother MacDonald
Stadium, their first triumph of the young Maritime Junior A Hockey
League campaign.
"In my five years of coaching, this is the biggest win I've had this
early in the season," said Pictou County head coach Troy Ryan. "It is
what it is, just three games into the season, but to play that well
against a team with that much experience was really a step forward."
Although Summerside has a veteran squad with Quebec Major Junior Hockey
League experience, the Crushers seemed in control from the start. After
Jeremy Sheppard opened the scoring in the first and Robbie Little
stretched the gap to 2-0 early in the second, the home side seemed to
gain confidence throughout.
Little was named the game's first star for his play, and the
19-year-old Truro native seems to be fitting well in the league after a
season in prep school.
He thought the improved play was simply a matter of time.
"We're just fusing as a team now," Little said. "We've had hard
practices, and we're learning systems, not just playing pick-up hockey."
While the young talent showed poise, one veteran provided the backbone
to success. Alexandre Quessy stopped 37 shots in the victory, a steady
effort that will be counted upon to ease further growing pains.
Shawn O'Donnell rounded out the scoring, and got under the skin of the
visitors as the game wore on. For their part, Summerside hardly looked
the older team, losing their cool while trying to draw their
inexperienced opponents into penalties. The result was a few Crusher
injuries and a penalty box full of Capitals.
Still, the Crushers could have capitalized more with the man advantage, scoring just once in 13 chances.
"I told the boys, we'll fight, but it will be on our terms," Ryan said.
"We're not going to get sucked into someone else's strategy and start
taking penalties."
Brad Smith had the lone Summerside goal.
The Crushers (1-1-1) will seek their second win in a row tonight in
Bridgewater, when they take on the Lumberjacks. The Bridgewater team is
the transplanted Halifax Wolverines franchise, and currently stands at
2-1.

Crushers defenceman scheduled for surgery
The News
The News
NEW GLASGOW – Pictou County Weeks Crushers defenceman Geoff McNaughton was scheduled to have minor ankle surgery today.
McNaughton was to have some bone chips removed from his ankle, which has bothered him since late last season.
There was no word on how long the veteran would be out of the lineup.
“Hopefully he’ll be back by the home opener,” on Sept. 11, said coach Troy Ryan said.
Ryan cut a handful of players this week, but did hang on to Jordie Shaw
for the time being, Shaw is an Amherst-area native who scored their
only goal in a 7-1 loss to the Truro Bearcats in an exhibition game on
Tuesday.
There are now four goaltenders in camp; starter Alexandre Quessy, along
with Max Pelzner, Travis Hall and Chris Denny, who played high school
hockey in Cape Breton.
The Crushers host Truro on Sunday night at 7:30 p.m. for their second and final pre-season game.
