Halifax- The Pictou County Weeks Crushers dramatically ended the Halifax Lions season last night in front of nearly 1200 fans at the Halifax Fourm. In a series that had everything from blowouts to double overtime endings, the two teams arguably saved their best finish for last.
Crushers forward Sean Hoyt gave the Crushers a late lead in the third period when he finished off a great pass from Cpt. Geoff Hum to score a shorthanded marker. With a little more than a minute remaining, the Lions were able to tie the game on a power play goal of their own. Then, with only 7 seconds remaining in the game, Crusher sniper Dan Joyce came off the bench, took a pass from Cody Roland and was able to beat Lions goaltender Kody Blois, sending the Crushers to the Bent Division Finals.
Also scoring for the Crushers in the win was Hum, and Hoyt (2). During the game the Crushers hit seven posts and were finally able to solve Blois late in the 2nd period. Although hyping up their "underdog" status for most of the series, the Lions only finished 8 points back of the Crushers in the regular season and actually won the season series against the Crushers. The Lions threw everything they had at the Crushers which made for a very entertaining series.
Moving forward, the Crushers now must prepare for a match up with the Truo Bearcats. The same Bearcat sqaud that was 5 - 1 versus the Crushers this season, including a 7-0 thumping in their last meeting. Fans should expect some entertaining games throughout this series, which gets underway this Saturday, March 20th in Truro.
